Comparison between different dilution rates on canine semen freezing using Tris-buffer with the addition of egg-yolk and glycerol Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,A.R.; Cardoso,R.C.S.; Silva,L.D.M..
Standardized sperm concentration and volume:volume extension were compared as dilution rates for canine semen freezing. Six proven stud dogs were submitted to two seminal collections by manual stimulation. Semen was evaluated and extended in tris plus egg-yolk and glycerol according to two different dilution rates. The first one was based on a standardized sperm concentration of 200x10(6) spermatozoa/ml and the second was a volume:volume extension at a proportion of one part semen to one part extender. Semen was frozen, stored in liquid nitrogen and thawed after one week. Sperm motility and vigor were appraised after each stage of the process and at 15 and 30min post-thawing. Sperm morphology was analyzed after collection and thawing. No differences were...

Derivation of supply curves for catchment water effluents meeting specific salinity concentration targets in 2050: linking farm and catchment level models or “Footprints on future salt / water planes” AgEcon
Nordblom, Thomas L.; Bathgate, Andrew D.; Young, Robert A..
The salt burden in a stream reflects the blend of salty and fresh flows from different soil areas in its catchment. Depending not only on long-run rainfall, water yields from a soil are also determined by land cover: lowest if the area is forested and greatest if cleared. Water yields under agro-forestry, lucerne pasture, perennial grass pasture, and annual pasture or cropping options span the range of water yields between the extremes of forested and cleared lands. This study explores quantitative approaches for connecting the hydrologic and economic consequences of farm-level decisions on land cover (productive land uses) to the costs of attaining different catchment level targets of water volumes and salt reaching downstream users; environmental,...

EFFECTS OF GRADUAL FEED DILUTION WITH INERT OR LESS NUTRITIVE MATERIALS ON GROWTH PERFORMANCE, FEED COST AND MEAT ORGANOLEPTIC PROPERTIES OF BROILER CHICKEN Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Atapattu,NSBM; Silva,LMS.
ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of the gradual dilution of broiler finisher diets with inert or less nutritive materials on growth performance, feed cost, and meat organoleptic properties. Broiler chicks (n=147) were allocated into 49 pens and fed a mash broiler finisher diet (control) or the control diet diluted either with cassava leaf meal (CLM), gliricidia leaf meal (GLM), grass meal (GM), rice bran (RB), sand (SND), or sawdust (SD). For a given diluent, six diets were prepared by mixing the control diet with the respective diluents (w/w) at 0% (fed from 27-28d),2% (fed from 29-30d), 4% (fed from 31-32d), 6% (fed from 33-34d), 8% (fed from 35-36d) and 10% (fed from 37-40d). SD, RB, GLM and GM significantly...

Influence of oyster farming Crassostrea gigas on the phosphate cycle in an intertidal zone : the role of biodeposition ArchiMer
Sornin, Jean-marc; Feuillet, Michelle; Heral, Maurice; Fardeau, Jean-claude.
Some aspects of the phosphorus cycle were studied in the estuarine bay of Marennes, Oléron, an area of intensive cultivation of Crassostrea gigas on the west coast of France. The annual cycle of dissolved phosphorus (mineral and organic) in the water column, interstitial water and at the sediment-water interface was followed, as well as the particulate phosphorus (total and assimilable) in sediments and in suspension. A comparison of the seasonal variations in these different forms of phosphorus in the suspended matters shows a deficit in "biodeposits" (sedimented faeces and pseudofaeces from Crassostrea gigas) equivalent to 20 mg.m -2.d -1 for assimilable phosphorus in July and September-October. This may be the result of consumption by the oysters, since...

Modélisation 0D des efflorescences d'Alexandrium en rade de Brest en compétition inter-spécifique ArchiMer
Le Gland, Guillaume.
Since 2010, planktonic algae Alexandrium minutum, cause of the PSP (Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning) syndrome, has been proliferating in early summer in the bay of Daoulas, within the roadstead of Brest. During this internship, a model has been designed in order to derive these blooms from physical parameters (temperature, irradiance, nutrient supply, dilution rate …). In the model, A.minutum competes with 50 other plankton species with randomly attributed optimal temperature and nutrient uptake abilities. It turns out to reproduce well the bloom of 2012, with a correct date of maximum concentration and a relevant order of magnitude. It reproduces the order of magnitude of 2013 concentrations, but the bloom then is too spread in time around the maximum....

Preliminary Study of Microzooplankton Grazing and Community Composition in the North of South China Sea in Autumn. OceanDocs
Su, Qiang; Huang, Liangmin; Tan, Yehui; Xu, Runlin; Li, Tao; Xu, Zhanzhou; Zhang, Janlin; Qiu, Dajun.
Microzooplankton community composition in the north of South China Sea was investigated during autumn (between September and October), 2004. Dilution technique using chlorophyll a (Chl a) was employed to estimate grazing rates and grazing pressure. The results showed that Polymenophorea Oligotrichida was the dominant group with 16 species, and there were 4 species in Oligotrichina and 11 species in Tintinnina. The ciliates abundance ranged from 9 to 102 ind/m3. Instantaneous growth rates of phytoplankton (k) varied from 0.03 / d to 2.13 / d. Grazing rates of microzooplankton(g) ranged between 0.01 / d and 1.06 / d. The grazing pressure on initial phytoplankton stock (Pi) and primary production (Pp) was 0.089 % - 65.23 % and 33.63 % - 86.04 %, respectively....

Size of samples and homogenizers during classification of damaged soybeans AGRIAMBI
Quirino,José R.; Resende,Osvaldo; Fonseca,Natalia N.; Oliveira,Daniel E. C. de; Parizzi,Fatima C.; Souza,Tiago A. de.
ABSTRACT Grain quality determination involves important stages such as collection of the representative sample, homogenization, and dilution. The interrelation among sampling, homogenization, and working sample size is essential to the reliability of the information generated. Therefore, this work aimed to analyse the performance of mechanical homogenizers used in the commercialization of grains in Brazil, as a function of the size of the working sample masses during grain classification. The samples were homogenized and diluted in Boerner, 16:1 multichannel splitter, and 4:1 multichannel splitter until reaching masses of 0.025, 0.050, 0.075, 0.100 and 0.125 kg to determine the level of damaged grains. A 3 x 4 x 5 factorial design was used, meaning three...
